    How it works

Vermont's battery stewardship law requires producers of household and medium-format batteries to fund free collection and recycling for consumers. The Battery Network (formerly Call2Recycle) runs the state's approved program through retail and solid-waste drop-off sites. Covers single-use and rechargeable household batteries (and removable batteries sold in products); car batteries are not part of it. Damaged or swollen batteries go to solid waste entities only.

    Cost & rules
    • Household single-use and rechargeable batteries only; not car batteries.
    • Damaged, swollen or leaking batteries: take to your solid waste district or town, not a store.

Before you go

  1. Tape the terminals of lithium and rechargeable batteries before transport.
  2. Keep damaged, swollen or leaking batteries separate and tell the operator.
  3. Ask which battery types are accepted; car batteries often go somewhere different.
