    How it works

North Dakota bans lead-acid batteries (car and similar batteries) from municipal waste and landfills. Anyone who sells lead-acid batteries at retail must accept used ones as trade-ins when you buy new lead-acid batteries. The law does not say whether a store must take a battery without a purchase or whether it may charge. NDDEQ adds that battery sellers and scrap metal dealers typically recycle lead-acid batteries, sometimes paying for them.

    Cost & rules
    • Lead-acid batteries only, as trade-ins when you buy new lead-acid batteries from the retailer.
    • Battery sellers and scrap metal dealers typically recycle lead-acid batteries and may pay for them.

Before you go

  1. Tape the terminals of lithium and rechargeable batteries before transport.
  2. Keep damaged, swollen or leaking batteries separate and tell the operator.
  3. Ask which battery types are accepted; car batteries often go somewhere different.
