  7. North Carolina computer equipment manufacturer take-back (G.S. 130A-309.134)State program · North CarolinaNorth Carolina residentsConditions applyFree
    How it works

Under North Carolina's Discarded Computer Equipment and Television Management law, every computer equipment maker must run a free and reasonably convenient recycling program for computer equipment discarded by consumers. It covers computers, monitors, printers and scanners, but not keyboards or mice. Take-back may be by mail, at a collection site or at a collection event. Smaller (Level I) plans take back only the maker's own brand. DEQ keeps a list of manufacturers with websites and phone numbers. TV makers have no matching consumer take-back duty; they fund and recycle their market share of TVs instead.

    Cost & rules
    • Only covered computer equipment: monitors, printers, scanners and print-scan-fax machines (and computers). Phones, calculators, MP3 players, keyboards, mice and TVs are not covered.
    • Some makers' larger plans also take other electronics, and may charge a nominal fee for items that are not covered computer equipment.
