  4. Maryland covered electronic device manufacturer take-back (Statewide Electronics Recycling Program)State program · MarylandMaryland residentsConditions applyFree
    How it works

Under Maryland's Statewide Electronics Recycling Program (Environment Article 9-1727 to 9-1730), makers of covered electronic devices (computers with monitors, and video display devices with screens over 4 inches) must register with MDE every year to sell in Maryland. Take-back is not required of every maker: makers that run an MDE-approved take-back program pay a lower fee, and such programs must be free, with a no-cost way to return the device (for example postage-paid mailers or collection points). MDE's list of registered manufacturers links to the makers with approved free take-back. Printers, mice, detachable keyboards and PDAs are not covered.

    Cost & rules
    • Desktop and laptop computers, including the monitor. Printers, mice, detachable keyboards and PDAs are not covered.
    • Only makers with an MDE-approved take-back program offer it; find them on MDE's registered-manufacturer list (linked makers recycle their brands for free) and follow the maker's toll-free number or web page. Programs take the maker's own brand, by mail-back or at collection points.
    • Some counties also recycle electronics for their residents; most county and city drop-offs are open to residents only. Contact your county.
    • Before you go: Approved programs must include instructions on wiping data from the device.
